Balraj (Dharmendra), affectionately called Raj, by his elder brother (Nana Palsikar) and sister Vija (Madhumati), is a student in college in the arts semester. As the family is not very rich, Raj decides to move from the hostel to the residence of a family. He finds one such family in Gandhinagar, which consists of Choudhury Hukumat Rai (Ashok Kumar), a lawyer by profession, his wife (Nimmi), and only daughter Shanti (Mala Sinha). Hukumat takes an instant liking to Raj, and tells him that his wife will only allow him to take up residence if he tells her that he is already married. Raj reluctantly does so, and thus acquires residence with the Rai family. Eventually Mrs. Rai takes a liking to Raj, so does Shanti. Shanti finds out Raj and her dad had lied to the family about Raj's marital status, she confronts Raj, and he readily admits that he lied.

A poor man with a large family struggles to make ends meet. His troubles are compounded when his daughter injures her foot which needs to be amputated. Desperate, he decides to abandon her.

Shankar lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay along with his pregnant wife, Maya, five sons and a daughter, Radha. He works in a mill, earning a mere Rs.137 per month. Radha has injured her foot and needs treatment but before that Maya gives birth to their 7th child, a son, Chotu. Their childless neighbors, Ranu and Sunderlal, want to adopt Chotu, but Maya refuses. Then when Shankar takes Radha to the nearest Government Hospital for free treatment, he is told to admit her as her condition is serious, which is does. Hoping that Radha will come home soon, he is horrified when he is subsequently told that Radha's foot may have to be amputated. Fearing the worst, he decides to abandon Radha, and tells his family that Radha has passed away. Watch what impact this news has on Maya, the rest of his sons, and on Radha herself.

The orphaned Poornima is consigned to the care of her grandfather by her uncaring aunt. Grandfather lives in isolation up a mountain with only goats and the boy goatherd, Jaggu, for company. Poornima enjoys an idyllic life until her aunt returns. Auntie has found a buyer for her niece. She is to become the companion of the wheelchair bound, Rupa. Forced to leave her mountain retreat, Poornima becomes firm friends with Rupa despite the presence of the scowling nanny. She receives a good education too. Even so, Poornima pines for the mountains. Jaggu pines for Poornima and, when on the doctor's advice, Poornima is returned to the hills, it's Rupa's turn to pine for her. Brought up the mountain for a visit, Rupa enjoys the health-giving properties of fresh air and goats' milk. When her wheelchair is tossed over a cliff by Jaggu (who resents the presence of the interloper)a miracle occurs. The story is adapted from the children's classic "Heidi".
